Despite this, Monaco has a rich history and a unique position.
Monaco's history can be traced back to the ancient Greek period in the 6th century BC, when the Temple of the Sea laid the foundations of the port of Monaco. In 1297, François Grimaldi of the Franciano family (Grimaldi), disguised as a monk, successfully captured the local fortress, creating the Grimaldi dynasty, which still rules Monaco today.
